Jade Rolling 101

Hello, friends! I know, I know; I went M.I.A. AGAIN. Classic Meghan, classic Lincoln Park Minute move. If you can forgive me, I have a lot of fun lifestyle (and personal) content coming your way on the blog and Instagram in 2018!

Today, I want to talk about a little beauty trend I’ve been all about the past few months. You’ve probably heard of jade rolling, right? If not, you may know ice rolling, which is super similar. You can read more about the latter in one of my favorite blogger babes’ (Payton Sartain of Hustle + Halcyon) posts here. Keep reading my post to learn what jade rolling is and why you should do it!

What is jade rolling?

At its’ essence, jade rolling is truly just a fancy way of saying facial massage. A jade roller itself is a tool you use to perform said facial massage (I got mine at Scratch Goods here in Chicago, made with real jade). As The Everygirl points out, jade was used in ancient Chinese medicine to draw out negative energy and balance your ‘chi.’ It’s said to have been regularly used on Chinese royalty.

Why should I do it?

Tons of reasons! First of all, it’s super relaxing to set aside a few minutes to essentially give yourself a facial. I personally find it quite stress-relieving as we typically hold a lot of tension in our face. I know for me, stress shows on my face, even if I don’t have any pimples. Jade rolling gives you an instant glow you’ll get hooked to! There are a lot of other health and skin related benefits as well:

  • Stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce puffiness and inflammation
  • Diminishes the appearance of fine lines and dark circles
  • Aids in beauty product absorption
  • Increases your blood circulation

How should I do it?

In the morning, I love using my jade roller right out of the freezer to depuff my face and under eyes (hello, hangover cure). At night, I prefer running it under hot water to warm it up and then rolling it over a facial oil or serum to really soak it into my skin. Two of my FAVORITE oils right now are Elemis Superfood Facial Oil and Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil. Both have tons of antioxidants to give you a glow!

When you jade roll, always go outward and upward and avoid rolling inward or back and forth. Only out and up! This YouTube video from Chicago blogger Dani McGowan of Mermaid Waves is great to understand the exact movements. Once you do it a few times, you’ll have ’em down pat.

Hope you enjoyed this post! Don’t forget to shop jade rollers and my favorite serums and oils below. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and keep your eyes peeled for more content soon!
